São Francisco Church (Igreja de São Francisco) is one of the most beautiful churches in Portugal. This gothic church built between 1383 and 1410 looks like an ordinary gothic church from outside, but inside you will find a completely different picture, one of the most outstanding baroque interiors in the country. In the 17th and 18th centuries, São Francisco Church underwent extensive baroque decorations. The interior was completely covered with gilded woodworks making the church look like a golden box.
The Museu de São Francisco that has a separate entrance across the small square is also worth visiting. The museum features the Catacombs with artifacts from the former monastery.
