São João Theatre

São João National Theatre is the main theatre venue in Porto, one of the most important theatres in the entire Portugal. The original theatre, built between 1796 and 1798, was destroyed by fire in 1908. The building was totally reconstructed by Marques da Silva who finished works on it in 1918. In 1920, the theatre was re-inaugurated.

Unfortunately, the theatre performed operas and plays only till 1932, and after that time it was transformed into cinema. Only in 1992, when the theatre was acquired by the government, it was returned its real status. The theatre built in a Portuguese neoclassical style is worth a visit indeed.
