Torre dos Clérigos

Porto’s Torre dos Clérigos (Clérigos Tower) is one of the three buildings of the Confraternity of Clergymen. The other two are the Church and the House of the Clergymen. All these constructions were designed by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni who moved to Porto from Rome. Nasoni worked in Porto from 1725 to 1773, the year when he died.

Torre dos Clérigos is one of the tallest constructions in northern Portugal. This remarkable tower is a real symbol of Porto attracting tourists by great views opened from the tower top. Torre dos Clérigos is 76 meters high, and you will have to climb 225 steps to reach the belfry. The reward for this climb would be outstanding views over the city of Porto and the Douro River.

The highlight of the Church is the magnificent marble retable in the Baroque-Rococo style. The organ by Dom Sebastião Ciais Ferraz da Cunha is also worthy of notice.

Visiting the Church or climbing the Tower, you can also pay attention to the building located opposite Torre dos Clérigos. This is the city’s former prison that now houses a photography museum.
